Using Netflix for Language Learning

Netflix offers a variety of Japanese content. The best part is that English and Japanese subtitles are widely available, and a VPN can expand that availability further.

Here are some tips on using Netflix for language learning.

Subtitles

Start with English subtitles, then switch to Japanese as soon as possible. This helps you gradually immerse yourself in the language.

Audio Descriptions

Some shows have Japanese audio descriptions. This feature narrates the on-screen actions, providing more language exposure.

Third-Party Extensions

Consider using third-party extensions like Language Reactor. This tool enhances language learning by providing dual subtitles, translations, and vocabulary support, making learning new words and phrases easier.

Dubs of Non-Japanese Shows

You can see dubs of non-Japanese shows when you are in Japan or by using a VPN. For example, I watched "Breaking Bad" with Japanese dubs. Having the context of the English version beforehand helps with comprehensibility and makes the learning process more enjoyable.

My Recommended Japanese Content on Netflix For All Levels

  1. Terrace House: A reality show with no script showcasing strangers living together. The ultimate immersion content.
  2. Midnight Diner: This series isset in a small Tokyo diner that operates from midnight to 7 AM. Each episode tells the heartfelt story of a customer.
  3. Samurai Gourment: This show offers a glimpse into Japanese food culture and is full of everyday speech. This is one of my favorites, and I have watched it repeatedly.
